I missed this last week (VERY busy day!)- forgot to recommend/promote a song… and this week, the choice of tune is all too obvious. Still – once more unto the breach! The John Lewis Christmas advert has arrived, and this year it features a little girl and her over-eager dragon friend named Edgar who – naturally – almost ruins Christmas, but – of course – finds redemption at the end.
It’s cute, it’s fun, and it’s closer to a Christmas story than last year’s one – which many saw as a cynical cash-in on Elton John’s popularity, the (then) upcoming Rocketman movie and the fact that the store were due to be selling (very expensive) pianos that Christmas.
It can be seen online now (see below) via YouTube but doesn’t debut on TV until Saturday night – when it will be shown during “X Factor: Celebrity” on ITV.
The song in the John Lewis ad has often been a cover by a modern band of a classic track and, instead of the X Factor winner, has become the new big contender for the UK Christmas Number one;- and this year follows that trend. The bookies had Lewis Capaldi as this year’s favourite to sing on the ad, ahead of the likes of Ed Sheeran, Jorja Smith, Sam Smith, Lily Allen and Elbow – but in the end the gig went to Dan Smith of Bastille – who belts out a pretty decent version of REO Speedwagon’s classic 1985 single “Can’t Fight this Feeling”.
Here’s the ad:
… and, as I can’t currently find a ‘full’ version of Dan Smith’s cover, here’s the original by REO Speedwagon:
[EDIT – Nov 20th]… Found it! Well… it’s just been released! Here it is:
